Cut Punch Snip a Cigar

The variety of cigar cutters available creates a class of its own. Cigar cutters vary in size, ranging from portable to desktop, as well as colors and finishes that promise to satisify. Cigar Cutters can have multiple functions by being paired with other tools such as key rings, folding knifes, money clips and even built into cigar lighters.

CHOOSING A CIGAR CUTTER

When choosing cigar cutters, it is wise to first consider your needs. What is the ring gauge size of the cigar that you most frequently smoke? Not all cigar cutters will cut every cigar. The typical cigar cutter will accommodate up to a 56 ring gauge cigar. There are also larger cigar cutters that will cut up to a 62 ring gauge cigar like the "
C-Blade Cigar Cutter". In addition to choosing the type of cigar cutter make sure the blades are made of stainless steel. Some cigar cutter manufactures offer lifetime warranties. Xikar is one of the most exclusive brands of cigar cutters. All of their cigar accessories are protected by their unconditional lifetime guarantee.

HOW TO CUT A CIGAR

The next consideration in choosing a cigar cutter is how you would like to cut your cigar. There are several different ways to cut a cigar. The first and probably the most popular is using a
guillotine cigar cutter. Guillotine cigar cutters come in two different blade configurations, single blade and double blade. The single blade cigar cutter cuts by holding the cigar against the metal or plastic body and slicing through the cigar cap from one side of the cigar. The single blade cutter is not as precise and does not cut as cleanly as a double blade guillotine cigar cutter. The double blade cigar cutter has blades on both sides of the cap when cutting cigar. Using equal pressure with sharp blades on both sides of the cigar creates a much cleaner cut of the cigar cap.

The proper way to cut a cigar using a guillotine cigar cutter can take some practice. Hold the cigar in one hand and the guillotine cutter with the other. Insert the head of the cigar in the cutter and cut into the cap, usually about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch down. If the head of the cigar is shaped like a cone, then cut into the cone, but not quite at the widest part. In any case, do not cut into the body of the cigar. That would cause the wrapper to unravel, and ruin your cigar. A good way to start if you have never cut a cigar before is to place the cutter on a flat surface. Put the head of the cigar in the cutter and use the flat surface as a guide while you cut.

Next on our list of cigar cutters is the wedge or V cutter. The "V" cutter resembles the guillotine cutter, but the shape of the blade slices a wedge or V into the cap of the cigar instead of cutting it completely off. The cutter is designed to slice from one side, and at the same depth, so there is no danger of cutting too deep.

The scissor cigar cutter is one of the more sophisticated types of cigar cutters out there. They are small and they work by simply cutting off the cap, much like a blade cutter. However, learning how to deftly use scissors on your cigars can be a challenge. But, if you master the art, you can impress your smoking buddies with it.

HOW TO PUNCH A CIGAR

Punching a cigar is the process of removing a round hole in the cap of a cigar. Using a cigar punch to remove the cap of a cigar directs the flavor of the cigar to the appropriate area of your pallet. There are several different types of cigar punches and the majority of them can be kept on a keychain. Others are built into lighters. To punch a hole in a cigar, extend the blade by twisting the body of the punch or pushing the plunger. Apply light pressure to the cap while rotating the cigar slowly. Pushing too hard or holding the cigar with too much pressure can cause the cigar wrapper to unravel. You will want to remove about 1/16" of the cap of the cigar. After punching the cigar, the cap will remain in the cigar punch. Most cigar punches have some type of cap removal. Either by twisting the body and retracting the blade or some punches have an auto ejecting button that will retract the blade using a spring. This will pop out the punched cap and you are ready for the next punch.

Now that we have discussed the several different types of cigar cutters, punches and their aplication, it is time to choose a cutter or cigar punch that best fits your needs. Most cigar smokers have several different cutters. Start with the basics, a guillotine cigar cutter that you can put in your pocket and take it with you when you are planning to enjoy a cigar away from home. If carrying around a cutter is not for you, a cigar punch on a keychain may suit your needs a little better. A keychain cigar punch is a guaranteed way to smoke a cigar if the opportunity arises out of the blue. They are light weight and take up very little space.

Other small cigar cutters include the scissor cigar cutter by Xikar. This is the ultimate men's tool! This lightweight, compact folding cigar scissor also includes a cigar poker, cigar box opener, screwdriver, and bottle opener. Cigar scissors can cut up to a 54 ring-gauge cigar and comes with key ring attachment for easy access. With a total thickness of .2 inches and only weighs 1.0 oz!

Table top cigar cutters are a nice addition to a home or office desk, or on top of your bar. If you have a smoking room in your house where you and your cigar buddies get together a large table top cigar cutter is the way to go. Not only are they functional they add a great conversation piece to any room. Some table top cigar cutters have multiple ways to cut a cigar. The Cigar Savor by Altidis is a table top cigar cutter crafted of fine hardwoods and features surgical quality steel cutting edges. Regardless of your cut preference, you're covered as the "Three In One" cutter boasts three sizes of v-cuts, a guillotine cutter and even a bullet cigar punch in a special compartment. With its added safety latch and cuttings drawer, you can't find a better, more complete, table top cutter.
